ON Duadi morning, Dekkard and Avraal rose only slightly later than usual. After shaving, showering, and dressing, Dekkard hurried downstairs just as Emrelda was leaving.

She looked at him and smiled. “Don’t be too hard on the Premier. He’s not used to working with you.” Before Dekkard could reply, she held up a hand and added, “Not a word, Steffan. I’ll see you tonight.”

Dekkard was still shaking his head as he entered the kitchen to fix cafés. Once he had the cafés at his place and Avraal’s, he went back to the cooler for the croissants. Then he picked up the morning edition of Gestirn. The first story to catch his eye had the headline BETTER LATE THAN NEVER. The crux of the story was contained in a few sentences …

… First Marshal Bernotte not only misjudged the capabilities of the mutineers aboard the I.S. Khuld. He failed to take the threat seriously enough and also did not convey the severity of the potential consequences to the Council, which became real and deadly … In turn, Premier Hasheem failed to act swiftly enough to remove Bernotte, but the removal was necessary, if better late than never …
